Welcome to BHSF Medical and Welfare Charity
BHSF is a Profit for Good health and wellbeing provider with a proud history dating back to 1873 when a Birmingham surgeon, Joseph Samson Gamgee, encouraged the city’s labourers to work an extra Saturday a year and the employers paid the £4,215 wages into a fund to provide medical care for those that needed it. From these humble beginnings, BHSF has grown into a national organisation at the forefront of employee health and wellbeing.
In 1972, the then Executive Council of BHSF decided that a sum of £573 3s 3d should form the nucleus of a new charity to which further donations would be made by BHSF over the years. BHSF Medical and Welfare Charity was established as an independent charity, separate to BHSF, and Trustees were appointed, and the Charity’s objectives were confirmed. The Charity has operated from 1 January 1973 since when nearly £2.5m grants and donations have been made.
